Best in Show
All of a sudden, there's a pack of dogs roaming the streets. While it used to be that you had to fly to the Windy City for the real deal, now it seems you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Chicago dog. Off the top of my head, there's Hot Diggity Dog on Ewing Street, The Dog on Nolensville Road and I Dream of Weenie in a mobile cart on Woodland Street. Zackie's is hanging its awning in Germantown in the ground floor of the Summer Street Lofts and promises to open soon. With so many variations on a commodity, how do you pick a wiener?

I went to I Dream of Weenie and couldn't find a Chicago on the menu. Did I miss something?

Posted 08/30/2007 at 02:11:06 PMSHaruch -- sorry for the tease. Maybe they call it something else? I can't remember. Anyway, I don't think IDOW is a Vienna dog, which is a shame. The buns are supposed to be from Provence, but the day we were there, they were out of Provence buns.

Posted 08/30/2007 at 03:59:07 PMIt's good to have some Chicagos around at all. If somebody did a New York dog--and there are good things about those done right too--the sauerkraut would be free. And people would get to know why the right drink to match the dog is papaya.

Honestly, the best hot dogs I've ever had (outside Wrigley Field) were on the streets of Toronto, where carts sizzle up foot-long beauties on every other street corner. Not only are the dogs and spicy sausages first-rate—juicy and beefy, with skin that crackles in every bite—but the egg buns they're served on are like nothing else I've ever found.
I love the way Hot Diggity crosshatches the ends of the dog, so they become these crunchy little X's on the grill.

Mr. Pink -- Just when I thought I couldn't love you any more -- in that wholly appropriate across-the-cubicles sort of way...You're exactly right. it's Nathan's first, followed by HB and Vienna. A few years back we did a non- scientific study of dogs at our house. We invited people around to taste-teste 10 brands. (The full results of the study were printed in NFocus magazine, the natural journal of record for such clinical trials.) Nathan's was the faraway winner when you factored in cost, availability and taste. (HB answers to higher authority, but they do it at a significantly higher price. Vienna are just plain hard to come by.) I might add that Best Kosher makes a nice dog, too. And they're usually available by the gross at Sam's.

I'm not sure how much longer The Dog on Nolensville will be around. It's rarely open, and the crowds (or anyone, whenever I drive by) sitting around eating dogs in their 'decor de douche' have failed to materialize. Stick with Hot Diggity.

Posted 09/05/2007 at 04:31:32 AMI was in The Dog last week for lunch and it was packed. Much to my surprise. It's the first time I've made it in there. The food was just fair to midland but the restaurant is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Posted 09/06/2007 at 12:50:28 PMSince this was posted, Zackie's has opened and is awesome!...The guy who owns it, Mike is so sweet and really tries to get to know his customers. The hot dogs are $3.75 and come with whatever toppings you want, free of charge, including chili and cheese. I would definitely recommend it!
